CeX replaces the Pound with Bitcoin in Glasgow

CeX, who started paying out in Bitcoin last month, has been sounding the call for Scottish independence today. CeX, is a bring-and-buy retail chain in the UK, and has an international website where customers can buy and sell their games and gadgets, respectively from and to the company. The company tied the official launch of its Bitcoin payments to the debate on Scottish independence today, hoping that it would create a Bitcoin high-street experiment with its branch in Sauchiehall in Glasgow.

While CeX has heralded today as its launch of Bitcoin pay outs, it has been offering Bitcoin payments on its website for over a month, as we exclusively reported in April: “CeX’s website states that bitcoin prices will be determined at the moment of sale, which makes sense given that the exchange rate is constantly varying. To verify the reports on Reddit, I created a CeX account, and indeed found a line for a bitcoin wallet address in the account settings page.”

David Butler, CeX Commercial Director says, “It’s really exciting to be at the centre of such an innovative trial. In our store, the staff and customers live and breathe technology so it’s only appropriate we looked at Bitcoin as a way for our customers to buy and sell video games and electronic goods. Not only does Bitcoin have a number of security and access benefits, but it is also gaining popularity amongst consumers the world over. We hope that by introducing Bitcoin on a much wider scale here in the UK, the popularity for the digital currency will grow and more and more gaming fans will enjoy its benefits with CeX.”

Unlike when CoinBuzz first reported on CeX, the Bitcoin launch in Glasgow will apparently feature in-store transactions, and declared the store a “Pound free zone”. This is in relation to the current debate on Scottish independence, and that the people of Scotland will have to change to a new currency, rather than sterling, if they withdraw from the United Kingdom.

Butler also stated, “We hope that by introducing Bitcoin on a much wider scale here in the UK, the popularity for the digital currency will grow and more and more gaming fans will enjoy its benefits with CeX.” Therefore, we could see a wider roll out of Bitcoin transactions in CeX stores across the UK, but at the time of writing there was on word of which branches would be next.
